- Joint Ph.D. position available at the labs of Julio Rozas and Miquel Arnedo (DEADLINE CLOSED, POSITION ASSIGNED)
A joint Ph.D. position is available at the labs of Julio Rozas and Miquel Arnedo to work on comparative genomics and phylogenetics of spiders. The PhD student will be involved in a research project that will use pyrosequencing approaches to study the evolution of the chemosensory system of spiders and to discover and develop new markers for spider phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies. We seek a highly motivated student with a degrre in biology or natural sciences and basic knowledge on phylogenetic methods, molecular biology and programming languages. Applicants should preferably have a Master's degree in natural science. Potential candidates should contact Miquel A. Arnedo This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. - "Mediterrània i Biodiversitat"
To commemorate the international Year of Biodiversity the Biodiversity Research Institute of the UB has organized a cycle of conferences on differnt aspects of Mediterranean Biodiversity. The topics addressed will span from the historical geological setting of the region to the consequences of fisheries over-exploitation for Mediterranean marine ecosystems
- Laboratory / research position available (Deadline now closed)
A Laboratory Technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Miquel Arnedo (http://www.marnedo.net) in the Department of Animal Biology at the University of Barcelona, Spain (http://www.ub.edu/bioani/). The main ongoing projects in the lab involve molecular systematics, pylogeography and use of DNA barcodes for biodiversity assessment of arthropods.
We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and independent individual with a biological science background (molecular biology / zoology is preferable).
Responsibilities will include:
Attributes deemed necessary for this position are good organizational and time management skills and a good work ethic. Although molecular biology skills are preferred, the necessary training will be provided. The position is part-time (20 hours/week). We offer a one-year renewable contract (up to 30 months maximum), to be started between March to June, 2010. The gross salary is 1000 € per month, with three salary bonus per year.
For further information please contact Dr. M. Arnedo ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), or to apply please provide a CV with details of two referees.
- PhD fellowship in Spider systematics and evolution at University of Barcelona (Deadline now closed)
A four-year Phd fellowship is available through the FPI program of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, funded as part of the research project “The ecosystem watchers: Mygalomorph spiders as bioindicators for monitoring ecological changes and evolutionary potential of terrestrial ecosystems”
Mygalomorph spiders are exceptionally well-suited for monitoring conservation status of terrestrial ecosystems in the Meditteranean basin. They exhibit high habitat fidelity, limited potential for dispersal and restricted distributional ranges, and are abundantly present in most Mediterranean habitats. Biologists, however, have long overlooked mygalomorph spiders due to their secretive habits and challenging taxonomy. The promising use of these spiders as bioindicators is therefore not fully developed. We propose to overcome these limitations by integrating genomic tools with ecological modelling techniques. We anticipate that results of our research will be relevant for conservation, management, and sustainable use of natural landscapes in the Mediterranean basin.
The post will be based at the Biodiversity Research Institute of the University of Barcelona.cWe look for a highly motivated student with an interest in evolutionary biology and experience in molecular biology tools, taxonomy or GIS techniques. Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and demonstrate evidence of past research achievement. The anticipated start date is fall 2010.
Potential candidates should contact Miquel A. Arnedo (
